Red Cedar
Red Cedar has a tight grain and higher levels of tannic acid which acts as a natural preservative. This makes red cedar more durable than the yellow variety. Red cedar tends to weather to a rich, dark color. It I possible to stain the material, but the tight grain means it has a low absorption rate which limits the color possibilities.
Yellow Cedar
Yellow cedar has a wider grain and in general terms, it will not last as long as red cedar will. It weathers reasonably uniformly to a very appealing silver tone. If you want to paint or stain your cedar roof, yellow cedar is better able to absorb a variety of colors and this will also help to protect the material.
